Palm has confirmed that its next generation of mobile devices
will be based exclusively on its own operating system, Palm
WebOS.
In February, Palm
officially dumped its first-generation Palm OS operating system
for Palm WebOS, but said it would continue to support Microsoft
Windows products.
But in a conference call about its 2010 financial year first
quarter
results released yesterday, Palm said it would include only
Palm WebOS-based devices in future development.
The exclusive focus on WebOS-based devices is a key part of
Palm's strategy for growth.
"We are launching more great Palm WebOS products with more
carriers and turning our sights toward growth," said Palm CEO Jon
Rubinstein in a statement.
Included in these products is the new
Palm Pre, which the company said helped boost its first quarter
financial results after it was launched in North America.
Palm Pre's roll-out in other parts of the world before the end
of the year, including the UK, is expected to boost Palm's second
quarter results.
Palm's first quarter results showed bigger losses than the same
period the year before, but higher than expected sales helped beat
Wall Street forecasts.
Palm lost $164.5m in the three months to 28 August, compared
with a $41.9m loss the year before.
Adjusted for one-time costs, Palm said it had losses of just
$13.6m on revenues of $360m, a loss of $0.10 a share, beating
analyst predictions of losses up to $0.24 a share.
