The MOD has completed a £1.2 million project to develop a high
performance computer system for the
Naval Nuclear Propulsion programme.
Fujitsu Technology Solutions supplied the system, which included
200 components in two and a half months, to underpin the joint UK
US initiative to develop the next generation of nuclear
submarines.
The project, supplied under Fujitsu's framework agreement with
the MOD, will provide the UK participants in the project with IT
systems which match the systems used by the project's US
partners.
Fujitsu supplied a system of over 200 components, including from
70 PCs, 7 servers, robotic storage tape libraries, software
applications and Cisco network switches.
And it delivered a video conferencing system which will link the
UK centre for the project at Rolls Royce in Derby with sites in
Barrow and Abbey Wood, and the USA, along with 3 mobile video
conferencing units.
Paul Bolt, UK / US technology exchange programme manager for the
NNPP, said, "The MOD had already worked successfully with Fujitsu
on other projects and had been impressed by the team's ability to
put together a cost-effective proposal that met our requirements in
terms of flexibility and tight timeline.
"Working with our team of engineers to build an IT system for
the NNPP demanded both a high degree of flexibility and
resourcefulness. The Fujitsu team proved to be more than up to the
task responding quickly to last-minute changes and delivering all
the equipment on time and within the proposed cost budget."
Fujitsu will work with NNPP engineers to maintain and repair the
system under a a "break and fix" contract.
