Facebook has acquired the social network Friendfeed, a
Silicon Valley startup company which allows people to
see what their friends are doing online and share
content.
It is possible that Facebook will use
Friendfeed to rival
microblogging service
Twitter, as it has similar capacities in real-time search.
Facebook made a failed attempt to buy Twitter last year.
Facebook is also releasing its own real time search engine in a
further sign that it is looking to directly rival Twitter. The
search engine will search photos, status updates, notes, links and
videos over the previous 30 days.
Friendfeed was founded by four former Google employees. They are
Paul Buchheit, the engineer behind Gamil, Bret Taylor, the group
product manager who launched Google Maps, Jim Norris and Sanjeev
Singh.
Friendfeed said on its official blog, "The Friendfeed team is
extremely excited to become a part of the talented Facebook team.
We have always been great admirers of Facebook, and our companies
share a common vision. Now we have the opportunity to bring many of
the innovations we have developed at Friendfeed to Facebook's 250
million users around the world."
