Businesses running IBM zSeries mainframes can now see how much
they could save by offloading workloads to IBM's add-on zIIP
processor.
The z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP) is a lower-cost
alternative for running certain mainframe applications.
Analyst company WinterGreen Research has built a web-based
calculator to measure the total cost of ownership of mainframe
service oriented architecture (SOA) applications that use zIIP in
combination with DataDirect Shadow integration middleware from
DataDirect Technologies.
"Technological advancements such as SOAs, web services, ANSI-92
SQL and XML Events address many of the challenges of mainframe
integration, but cost still remains a primary customer concern,"
said Susan Eustis, president and CEO of WinterGreen Research.
She said the tool could help businesses identify where they can
save money by moving workloads onto the zIIP.
The
calculator is designed to compute the daily and annual savings
in dollars and MIPS capacity that can occur by exploiting the zIIP
specialty engine.
DataDirect Shadow offloads SOA, event publishing and data
workloads from the mainframe GPP (general purpose processor) to the
non-restricted, more economic zIIP specialty engine.
