Google has changed the way it filters porn to stop it appearing
on its Chinese site.
Google said it has carried out a major engineering effort to
meet the
concerns in China. This included the disabling of a feature on
Google.cn and the redesign of
the home page.
Last week the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting
Center watchdog was reported to have complained to Google.
Google said: "Google has been working to remove pornography from
our search results in China, in accordance with our operating
license there."
"This has been a major engineering effort, and we believe we
have addressed many of the problems identified by the Government.
As part of these efforts, we have also temporarily disabled the
Google Suggest feature on Google.cn. Finally, we have redesigned
the home page of Google.cn to remove the radio buttons that offer
language and locale options.
"These buttons were used by a very small percentage of our
users. All other links on the home page of Google.cn remain
unchanged."
The China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center (CIIRC)
said earlier: "Google China has not conducted the oversight
required according to China's laws and regulations, and a large
volume of foreign internet pornographic information has entered our
borders through this website."
The CCIIRC was set up in 2004. It says it is a non-governmental
organisation, registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs of
China.
