
Information commissionerRichard Thomashas been awarded an OBE
in the Queen's birthday honours list.
Thomas was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire
(OBE).
He has played a role in highlighting the government's
encroachment on people's privacy. One of his most public
contributions was ruling that details of
MPs' expenses should be published, despite the government
originally rejecting a Freedom of Information request for them.
He warned that Britain is
"
sleep-walking into a surveillance society".
Thomas is
due to retire on 30 June.
Other IT-related honours include an OBE for Michael Newman,
managing director of Fujitsu Services, Dean James, chief operating
officer, corporate IT for the Department of Work and Pensions, and
Philip Evans, head of ICT at Caerphilly County Borough Council.
