Online auctionwebsite eBayis closing a customer service centre in Canada as part of a move to consolidate its North American operations.

The centre in Vancouver will close before the end of September. This will affect 700 workers but will have no impact on the companies PayPal and Skype.

The company will increase the number of staff it has at other centres around the world.

"We are working aggressively to deliver a better customer experience for eBay buyers and sellers," said Chad O'Meara, vice-president, customer service, eBay Marketplaces.

"While it is a difficult decision to close our Vancouver facility, we believe that consolidating our North America customer service operations will help accelerate our efforts to continually exceed buyer and seller expectations."

According to the latest BrandZ survey by Millward Brown Optimor eBay is the fifth most valuable retail brand worth nearly $13bn which represented a 16% increase compared to last years survey.
