Amazon Web Services (AWS) has begun offering grants of $100 per
student for free usage of its cloud infrastructure services in
eligible courses at accredited universities.
The AWS in Education programme aims to help the academic
community use Amazon Web Services for teaching and research. Amazon
said AWS in Education
allows educators, academic researchers, and students worldwide to
obtain free usage credits to tap into the on-demand infrastructure
of Amazon Web Services to teach advanced courses, tackle research
and explore new projects.
Amazon said it would also be awarding grants each quarter for
AWS service credits to enable higher education institutions conduct
research using the Amazon cloud.
The Malaria Atlas project
is one of the research projects that has already received a grant
from Amazon. The project aims to make detailed global maps of
malaria to help drive the fight against the disease. The grant will
enable researchers to use Amazon Web Services to run parallel
processing applications and store large amounts of data online.
