The global cyber-threat continues to escalate and online
fraudsters are more organised, collaborative and effective than
ever, says Art Coviello, president of RSA, the security division of
EMC.
“Our adversaries operate as a true ecosystem that thrives
through interdependence and constant adaptation,” he told the
opening keynote at RSA Conference 2009 in San Francisco.
Coviello issued a call to action to the information security
industry to work together in a similar way to create a more robust
security infrastructure.
“Because information moves everywhere, the problem must be
solved across the infrastructure,” he said.
The criminal threat, the economic crisis and emerging
technologies like virtualisation, social networking and cloud
computing are all creating the need and opportunity to rethink
security.
According to Coviello, swift adoption of the newer technologies
offers the opportunity to restructure the information
infrastructure and learn from past mistakes.
“Security technologies are still applied piecemeal from multiple
suppliers, cluttering the information landscape and leaving
perilous gaps of risk,” he said.
Coviello urged the industry to embrace a common development
process to enable a more secure infrastructure through
collaborating on standards and sharing technology.
This approach will enable security products to work together
across infrastructure and supplier boundaries as part of a single,
integrated system.
“We have the chance to not only change the game, but to win the
game by capitalising on a shared development process fostered by
inventive collaboration,” he said.
