UK content for UK users, supported by asuper-fast, universally accessible digital
network, is what the British Prime Minister
Gordon Brown called for this morning.
Speaking to 250 top communications industry executives at the
Digital Britain summit in London, Brown said a Digital Britain
was essential to preserving and enhancing Britain's position as a
world leader in the global economy.
He said the creative industries, such as film, TV, radio and
publishing, needed investment and legal support to develop and
protect the intellectual property they produce.
Supporting Brown, culture secretary Andy Burnham said he would
chair a global creative industries "cabinet" in October that would
aim to find ways to protect intellectual property globally.
Business secretary Peter Mandelson called for a cross-government
approach that aligns Britain's skills, infrastructure and
innovation. This would ensure UK businesses could succeed in a
"rapidly changing and increasingly competitive global low-carbon
economy".
He said, "Broadband is not just going to underwrite the
communications industry. It will redefine the productivity and
competitiveness of UK companies for decades to come."
