Google is to cut almost 200 sales and marketing jobs, in a move
it said would improve efficiency and soften the impact of
investments that have not made expected returns.
Overlapping units duplicated efforts and complicated decision
making, said Google global sales head Omid Kordestani in a
blog posting.
"In addition, we over-invested in some areas in preparation for
the growth trends we were experiencing at the time," he said.
According to Kordestani, Google considered a number of different
options before deciding to restructure to improve efficiency.
"We will give each person time to try to find another position
at Google, as well as outplacement support, and provide severance
packages for those who leave the company," he said.
The cuts are the latest by Google as it seeks to get rid of
unprofitable business units. In February, Google cut 40 jobs after
deciding to
sell off its radio advertising business.
Google has also cut its recruiting department by about 100
positions and laid of more than a thousand contractors so far this
year, according to Silicon Valley's
Mercury
News.
