The BBC may have to subsidise UK broadband.
Following publication of the Digital Britain report, Lord Carter
said today that the BBC may have a role to play in supporting the
roll-out of UK broadband, given that it already charges a licence
fee for TV.
The BBC's iPlayer, for downloading TV programmes over the
internet, has been very popular with consumers, but ISPs have been
less happy with its success, due to the big bandwidth required to
download programmes.
At the same time, experts say the BBC needs to attract the
so-called Y-generation, the youth market, where YouTube is the
preferred entertainment channel.
