Skype has announced a partnership with Nokia to put the
Skype voice over IP calling software onto its phones.
Nokia will initially offer Skype on its N-Series high-end
smartphones. The N97, which goes on sale in June, will be the first
to have Skype embedded on it.
The Skype feature will start shipping on the device in the third
quarter of this year.
Skype will be integrated into the N97 address book, allowing
users to see when Skype contacts are online through "presence"
technology.
Users will also be able to take advantage of Skype's
instant-messaging client.
Skype will see N97 users being able to make free and low-cost
phone calls over the internet, whether they are on a 3G mobile
network or a Wi-Fi network.
Earlier this week, Sony Ericsson
said it would be offering a Skype "panel" feature on its
Windows Mobile Xperia1 device.
