Morrisons has signed a £6m-plus contract with Zetes to provide an automatic voice-based goods picking system in its warhouses.

Morrisons' system is based on Zetes' 3iV voice software and more than 2,000 Vocollect Talkman voice computers.

Once live, it will voice-enable thousands of Morrisons' warehouse operators based at all the retailer's distribution centres. They are currently working from a paper-based picking system. An automatic voice system should increase picking accuracy.

Implementation will be conducted in phases and is scheduled for completion by 2010.

Zetes had successfully completed a three-month pilot project to prove the business case of its voice system at Morrisons' Corby Freezer Distribution Centre.

"Zetes' voice picking system met all our requirements and we are looking forward to a speedy implementation", said Gary Barr, IT director at Morrisons. "It was important to identify a supplier able to deliver and support our solution to the highest levels."
