New Yahoo chief says company should not be broken up

Yahoo's new CEO says the search portal will be better served by being kept whole rather than sold off in chunks to appease shareholders.

After reporting a fourth-quarter loss, Carol Bartz said, "This is a fantastic internet property, and it doesn't deserve everybody trying to pick it and pull it apart.

"This is not a company that needs to be pulled apart and left for the chickens."

Microsoft is still said to be interested in acquiring Yahoo's search business, after a proposed acquisition of the whole company fell through last year.

In a conference call after the results, Bartz wouldn't rule out such a transaction nor declare any support for it.

She said the long-term interests of the company had to be measured against potential short-term shareholder value.
