Unisys is planning to cut 1,300 jobs this
year, with 160 going in the UK, according to
the union Unite.
The American IT services provider plans to save $225m in 2009
through the job cuts, Unite said. The company said it could confirm
“around 100” jobs would be going in the UK.
Unite national official Peter Skyte said that while the global
workforce is being cut by just 4%, the cutbacks represent more than
12% of UK workers.
Staff in Milton Keynes, Uxbridge, London and those based at home
are most affected.
The company has also announced a reduction in redundancy pay and
a global pay freeze.
The news is the latest in a round of
job cuts to hit the UK IT sector.
Peter Skyte said, "The high level of redundancies which have
been announced shows again that it is quicker, cheaper and easier
for companies like Unisys to cut jobs in the UK compared to
elsewhere in the European Union. Urgent action is required to stop
this happening in the future and to safeguard the future of highly
skilled people vital to the country and the economy."
A spokesman for Unisys said, “Unisys can confirm that it will be
making a number of redundancies in its UK operations. The decision
reflects the difficult economic climate and is part of the
company’s ongoing efforts to narrow its business focus to what it
does best; simplify its business model, and reduce its expenses to
drive revenue and earnings growth. These measures are designed to
enable continued high levels of service to Unisys customers.”
