Sun Microsystems has laid off 1,300 workers, as part of
a previously announced cost-cutting programme to axe around 6,000
staff.
The cost-cutting,
announced by the firm last November, will eventually see up to
18% of Sun's headcount being slashed.
The loss-making company had previously announced the loss of 130
jobs at its Scottish site.
The firm has cut thousands of jobs over recent years, as its
share of the high-end server market
rapidly shrank.
Sun is now betting on the
growth of open-source systems as its salvation, investing
heavily in
open-source Solaris- and
Java-based products.
The 1,300 jobs to go are worldwide and across the company, and
include vice-presidents and directors, according to Sun.
