Thomson Reuters has singed more than 100,000 Indian farmers up
to a service that provides them with information on the prices for
their crops.
The Reuters' Market Light (RML)service was launched just over a
year ago in the State of Maharashtra and Punjab, and more than
100,000 three-month contracts have been signed.
RMT provides market intelligence to farmers including crop
prices, weather forecasts, and relevant agricultural news.
Amit Mehra, managing director of RML at Thomson Reuters, said
users can save money by being better informed when negotiating with
suppliers and customers.
"Every six weeks we poll between 400 and 700 customers. We are
consistently informed that RML delivers value, customers feel
empowered in their negotiations and that the direct financial
returns have been phenomenal," he added.
Earlier this year, RML was selected by the United Nations
Development Programme as having the potential to contribute to the
Millennium Development Goals.Theseare eight international
development goals that 192 United Nations member states and at
least 23 international organisations have agreed to achieve by the
year 2015.
