In a bid to bolster the reach of its
mobile computing customer base, Vodafone has launched a new pay
as you go mobile broadband service, ‘TopUp and Go’.
The
TopUp and Go mobile computing bundle comprises a 4 Gbyte USB
modem which costs £39 and which is pre-loaded with 1 Gbyte of
data.
Vodafone says that this offers 30 hours' worth of web surfing,
650 emails or dozens of downloads and is the equivalent of £15’s
worth of
mobile broadband data allowance. Additional blocks of 1 Gbyte
of data can be purchased at £15 a time.
The product is being marketed by the telecoms operator as an
ideal tool for mobile computing users who want a flexible service
but don’t want to be tied down to lengthy contracts. Vodafone says
that users will be able to enjoy download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps
and uploads at the standard 3G speed of 384 Kbps.
The 29g USB modem will work in the UK and not on Macs. It will
however support laptop and PCs that are based on Microsoft Windows
2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista operating systems. Those who
require speeds up to 7.2 Mbps or who want to use the product
outside of the UK will need to opt for Vodafone’s monthly contract
mobile broadband service.
