Colin Cobain, a former chief information officer at Tesco, has joined HM Revenue & Customs as a non-executive director.

Cobain was CIO at Tesco until November 2007. His appointment at HMRC, along with three other people appointed as non-executive directors, will last for three years.

Mike Clasper, chairman of HMRC and chair of the board, said of the appointments, "This is the next step in strengthening the department's governance. The non-executives bring to the board a diverse mix of expertise and skills from across both the public and private sectors."

Cobain is currently non-executive chairman of Safe Surgery Systems and interim group CIO at the brewer SABMiller.

He has previously held senior IT jobs at Kingfisher Plc group and Thorn EMI.
