Thousands of barristers have been exposed to the risk of identity theft after disks containing personal data were stolen from the Bar Council offices in London.

Four computer hard drives used to back-up information and a laptop computer were taken in a burglary at the Bar Council offices in Holborn, according to the Metro newspaper.

The stolen disks contained more than 12,000 records of personal details of barristers and some trial witnesses.

The Bar Council claims the disks were encrypted.

In August, health chiefs in Colchester fired a senior manager who lost 21,000 unencrypted confidential patient records when his hospital laptop was stolen from his car.
