UK employees continue to send data on CDs and by post despite
knowing the
data loss risks, research has found.
The problem is that 25% of UK businesses do not have secure
transfer systems, a survey by IT services firm
Axway has revealed.
The survey of 100 IT decision makers and 1,000 office workers
showed that 72% of those who used CDs and ordinary post would
prefer a more secure method.
This highlights that users are aware of the risks of physically
transferring files, but will continue using these methods if there
is no alternative, the survey found.
Only 33% of IT professionals said they were concerned about
sensitive information on physical media such as CDs and memory
sticks.
This shows the laissez-faire attitude that businesses are
adopting towards sensitive data, the survey report said.
Dave Bennet, CTO of Axway, said it is disconcerting that
businesses in the UK are not taking the transfer of sensitive
information seriously enough.
"The issue is that secure alternative methods are not there and
as a result, businesses are putting themselves at risk of data
breaches," he said.
