People who have a second-generation iPod touch handheld computer can turn their device into an iPhone thanks to a free software download.

The software provided by Truphone works by routing calls over the internet through Wi-Fi. The company said the Truphone for iPod touch software allows users to make free calls to other iPod touch owners: no Sim, no contract, no money.

Available from the company's website, users need a microphone adaptor to speak to other iPod touch owners, customers of Truphone's internet telephony service, and users of the Google Talk instant messaging service.

The software also allows users to:

  • Send instant messages to Skype and MSN
  • Call Skype users
  • Call MSN users
  • Check and set facilities for Twitter
  • Check and set facilities for Facebook
