Nokia has completed its
previously announced acquisition of Symbian, which controls the
world's most popular mobile operating system.
Nokia was already the leading light in Symbian OS development as
the major shareholder, and with complete control of the company it
intends to push Symbian as an open-source platform.
The establishment of the new
Symbian Foundation
has the backing of AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, NTT DOCOMO,
Samsung, Sony Ericsson, ST-NXP Wireless, Texas Instruments and
Vodafone.
All Symbian employees are to become Nokia employees on 1
February 2009, said Nokia.
