IT jobs are at risk at the
Independent newspaper after it announced it will merge its back
office services with Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily
Mail.
Publishers Independent News and Media will move to Kensington in
London for the merger. The company estimates the move will save
£10m a year as part of a recently announced company
restructure.
As many as 100 jobs are likely to be lost as a result of the
merger, the Daily Telegraph reported. These will mainly be in IT,
payroll and finance as the departments are integrated.
The Independent newspaper titles - the Independent and the
Independent on Sunday - will have their own office space and will
remain editorially and commercially separate. Associated Newspapers
publishes the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday, the Evening Standard,
the Metro and the London Lite.
Ivan Fallon, chief executive of Independent News and Media said,
"This move will transform the prospects of the Independent titles.
We will have immediate cost savings when we move offices."
Ian Hanson, operations director of Associated Newspapers, said
the cost savings from a sharing of infrastructures would be
beneficial to both organisations.
