Intel has unveiled its first Nehalem desktop processor, which
it says is 40% faster when dealing with web and multimedia
applications.
The Core i7 processor, with a top speed of 3.2Ghz, is the first
member of the new Nehalem family of processor designs which have
been under development for some time.
Intel said the Core i7 processor speeds video editing, immersive
games and other popular internet and computer activities by up to
40% without increasing power consumption.
"Intel has delivered the fastest desktop processor on earth to
the most demanding users on earth, the ones who are using their PCs
for video, gaming and music," said Patrick Gelsinger, senior
vice-president and general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise
Group.
"When you couple what is Intel's biggest leap in chip design
with other incredible innovations such as Intel's solid state
drives, the Core i7 processor has redefined the computer of
tomorrow," beamed Gelsinger.
The chip has been launched just days after Intel posted a sales
and profit margin warning for the full year.
The full year results will be revealed in early January and the
figures are expected to be well down on last year.
