Motorola is slashing another 3,000 jobs and delaying the
spin-off of its loss-making mobile phone business after suffering a
£256m loss in the third quarter.
The company had planned to offload the mobile phone business by
the third quarter of 2009. However, the firm said the global
recession would delay that move, so the sale has been put back to
an unspecified later date.
The mobile phone unit's revenue dropped 31% to £2bn in the
latest quarter, and its operating loss grew from £160m to
£541m.
Motorola said it sold 25.4 million mobile phones compared with
37.2 million a year ago, and its global share of the market fell to
8.3%. Two years ago, Motorola held 20% of the market.
The job cuts follow the 9,000 Motorola has already cut in the
last year.
