Suppliers must provide better security, says Toshiba

Suppliers are not doing enough to help organisations improve IT security, according to a senior fellow at Toshiba.

Steve Crawley said the industry has not made it easy enough for companies and the public sector to implement good data security technology.

"People rarely use the security technologies available and no, we are not doing enough. We could do more."

Crawley, who is senior fellow in mobile technology at Toshiba, said the industry can currently provide 80% security to customers. "It could probably add another 15% to that," he said.

It is impossible to make anything 100% safe, he said, but suppliers need to do more.

"We need to make the security we deliver even more secure, cover more angles, make it easier to use, so people almost have no choice but to use it."

He said higher security costs more money, which a lot of users aren't prepared to pay.

Crawley was speaking at Toshiba's Mobility in Business event, held in Zurich last week.
