Barclays is axing 1,800
IT jobs in the UK as it seeks to build "centres of excellence" in
offshore locations.
The move was mooted at the beginning of this year, with the bank
saying it informed staff in January about its plans.
Staff at Barclays' global infrastructure and service delivery
(GISD) unit expect to see many of their jobs move to India, Hungary
and Singapore.
It is believed around 700 of the 1,800 UK permanent and
temporary jobs to go will disappear by September. Another 1,100 are
set to go by 2010.
Around 1,000 GISD jobs are expected to stay at UK locations in
London and Cheshire.
Barclays announced that 1,100 jobs would go at its IT processing
plant in Poole, Dorset last year, and recently announced a round of
customer contact centre job cuts across the UK.
Barclays said of the latest round of IT cuts, "we need to become
fully global, with centrally managed technologies in centres of
excellence in key locations around the globe".
The company added, "As far as possible, we will manage the
reduction in headcount by reducing the number of contractors and
temps we employ."
