Intel and DreamWorks Animation have formed an alliance designed
to promote the production of stereoscopic 3-D filmmaking
techniques.
The partnership has already resulted in the production of the
Monsters vs Aliens
movie scheduled for release in March 2009. The companies say that
they are aiming to pair
Intel's visual computing products with DreamWorks' track record
for content creation.
Although 3-D films have been around since the 1920s, their most
recent revival of popularity was in the early 1980s when
directors in the
horror and suspense genre embraced them.
According to Intel, the option to use today's chips with
multiple processing cores opens the door to a new level of 3-D
authoring and rendering of high quality images - a prospect that
may once again draw audiences to cinemas for 3-D films.
Intel says that it also aims to push 3-D viewing technology onto
other platforms including home theatre systems, personal computers,
video games,
online environments and mobile devices.
