Worldwide server sales grew 2.5% in the first quarter of 2008, a
smaller increase than first reported, says analyst Gartner.
The year-on-year increase saw
IBM take the biggest sales share of the market, while
Hewlett-Packard grabbed the biggest number of sold units, said
the analyst.
Gartner had previously estimated an overall 4.3% increase with
Hewlett-Packard (HP) taking the top spot in terms of sales, but
the analyst has now changed its figures.
"Based on updated guidance and additional analysis of the data,
we have revised the revenue statistics for the first quarter of
2008," said Jeffrey Hewitt, an analyst at Gartner.
"We previously said that
HP and
IBM continue to vie for market leadership in the worldwide
server market based on revenue. This is still the case but the
updated data shows that
IBM maintained the number one position in worldwide server
revenue in the first quarter of 2008."
The previous data showed HP had taken the lead in worldwide
server revenue. The updated statistics show
IBM accounted for 29.4% of worldwide server revenue in the
first quarter of 2008. HP was number two with 28.3%.
