Britain is the most spammed country in the world with almost a quarter of the world's unsolicited e-mail.

Security software company McAfee said British users were now the preferred target for spam and phishing campaigns to sell bogus goods and offer fraudalent get-rich schemes.

As an experiment, McAfee gave UK and international volunteers a PC with no firewall protection and a fresh email address.

The volunteers opened and responded to messages from untrusted sources and were deluged with more spam.

They were also given £250 each to spend on items offered in spam messages.

The UK users also received the most adult content bar the US users in the experiment.

In total, the 50 volunteers from ten countries received 104,000 unwanted e-mails in just 30 days.
