Six Wimax wireless technology providers are joining together to jointly license Wimax patents to reduce royalty charges and encourage Wimax adoption rates, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The companies joining forces are Cisco Systems, Intel, Samsung, Sprint Nextel, Alcatel-Lucent, and Clearwire, says the paper.

They are forming an organisation called the Open Patent Alliance to help reduce royalty rates.

Long-range wireless Wimax broadband is seen as an alternative to DSL broadband in rural areas, which are poorly served by existing broadband providers.
