Aviva Insurance Group, which owns Norwich Union, has signed a six-year IT outsourcing contract worth £300m with Cable & Wireless.

The company will provide 72 separate services, including voice telephony, data, local and wide area networks, and international services to Aviva's 35,000 staff based in the UK and India.

Aviva will be introducing services such as IP telephony and IP contact centre services, managed Blackberry services and advanced speech recognition technology across UK sites as part of the deal. Cable & Wireless will manage more than 1,000 sites, with 57,000 individual telephone points and 74,000 data points.

Aviva said its customers are increasingly interacting with it through e-mail and e-commerce tools and that outsourcing management of its IP network will help develop online services.

Norwich Union Insurance CEO, Igal Mayer, said, "It is important to our market success that we are able to respond to business and customer needs promptly and reliably."
