EDF Energy is to cut maintenance costs by deploying mobile routing technology to monitor the performance of 400 electricity substations across South East England.

The six-month roll-out of Sarian wireless routers and management software will enable the UK's largest electricity distribution network to diagnose and remedy problems remotely.

Roger Yeo, senior product manager at EDF Energy Networks, said, "The system means we no longer have to dedicate time and money sending staff to fix problems or wait for external engineers."

The software will also enable EDF to carry out routine operations such as software upgrades

The routers will link EDF's monitoring system to connect to a wireless network to send performance information using the company's VSat satellite network.

If the satellite connection is unavailable, the routers will automatically switch to sending the information using a GPRS mobile network connection.

EDF said Sarian systems were chosen because of their security features and track record with cash machines and point of sale systems.
