IT managers doubta recession lies aheadand are making
no changes to department budgets, a survey of 100 UK IT managers
has found.
Some 78% of UK IT managers did not identify any areas where they
could make any savings, despite recent predictions by analyst firm
Gartner that virtualisation, storage area networks and voice over
IP projects would become the key strategic areas to optimise IT
usage and realise savings.
The survey, carried out by storage supplier B2net, found that
98% of IT managers had not prepared contingency budgets and had no
intention of doing so, saying their business could withstand a
recession.
Only 2% had taken any action
to cut operating expenditure. This could be explained by the
fact that 64% said a recession was very unlikely in the next few
years and, of the 14% who did say they thought a recession was
likely, half said it would not happen until after 2010.
Bullish sentiments were also expressed about whether cutting IT
costs would have a negative impact on service quality and product
delivery, with 64% saying that the
impact would be negligible.
