Queen Mary, University of Londonhas hiredTHUSfor the provision of an openfibre networkthat will improve connectivity and support wider e-learning.

The THUS network will carry the institution's data and will link voice traffic between its four core sites, improving its ability to deliver core network services effectively.

Queen Mary is one of the largest multi-faculty colleges of the University of London, delivering degree programmes and research across a wide range of subjects, including law, medicine, dentistry, humanities, science and engineering.

The new network connections will run between the university's four main campus locations in London's East End and in the City of London.

In addition to supporting more than 2,800 staff with access to operational applications and databases, the optical fibre network will provide enhanced access to the academic community.

The THUS system will provide a gateway to improve collaborative working with the wider academic research community.

The open fibre network will enable a variety of applications including collaborative tools in support of e-science and video conferencing, as well as providing more consistent access to Janet, the UK's Joint Academic Network, which connects educational networks across the UK and around the world.

John Cobb, assistant IT director at the college, said, "At Queen Mary we appreciate the advantages a strong and reliable communication network brings to everyone.

"The network upgrade from THUS provides higher speeds and bandwidth to the core network infrastructure, and it is a significant development in enhancing our capabilities," said Cobb.
