Business are deferring upgrades toMicrosoft Vistain favour of the next release of the Windows operating system, according to Forrester research.

A quarter of the 2,300 businesses surveyed said they planned to upgrade to Vista this year. But Forrester said they might continue to use XP and wait for the release of Windows 7, the successor to Vista, which is scheduled for the second half of 2009.

Only 6.3% of companies were using Vista at the end of 2007. Those who had migrated to Vista were previously on Windows 2000, rather than XP, which the majority of users (89%) still run.

"Given the slow start, little gain in productivity, and the timetabled release of Windows 7 in the second half of 2009, businesses may decide to pull back roll-outs or skip the version altogether, pushing Vista the way of Windows Millennium," said Thomas Mendel, research director at Forrester.

Additional research by Forrester predicted that by the end of 2008, 32% of business will have started deploying Vista another 17% plan to deploy the OS in 2009 or beyond.
