IBM has brought together its I-series and P-series
servers into one family, calledPower System, designed to support
15,000 applications for Linux and i5/OS.
The company has introduced three servers as part of the family:
the IBM Power 520 Express, the IBM Power 550 Express and the IBM
BladeCenter JS12, which it says have been designed to help small
and mid-sized clients focus on running their businesses instead of
their computers.
The BladeCenter machine supports multiple operating
environments, including Windows, UNIX, I and Linux in a single box.
Based on the Power6-based, two-core processor, IBM said the
BladeCenter JS12 can be used to consolidate servers into the right
chassis to reduce space requirements and energy costs. Two versions
are available: the BladeCenter H with datacentre scalability or the
BladeCenter S for an office environment.
Nortel is supporting the Power System platform with a unified
communications product called the Nortel Software Communication
Server. Nortel said the product would offer users VoIP on a single
platform with unified communications integrated with business
applications such as CRM, ERP, POS, e-mailing and calendaring
(including IBM Lotus and Microsoft Exchange).
