The government is to make major changes to the UK
transport system, underpinned by IT, as part of Alistair Darling's
"green" budget.
The chancellor said the government would look seriously at
national
road charging as part of a battle plan to reduce congestion on
UK roads.
Darling said, "I am setting aside new funding to develop the
technology that could underpin national road pricing, inviting
tenders to test this, and the results are expected next year."
Road pricing pilots could see schemes like London's
congestion charge system, built and run by Capita, running
nationally.
Darling also announced that airports would make greater use of
automated biometric technology to provide fast-track routes through
immigration.
