European consumers say businesses and governments are
failing to protect theirpersonal information
online.
A survey commissioned by VeriSign found that 57% of UK
respondents said banks, retailers and the government were failing
to do enough to protect their data.
This was the highest percentage in Europe, with the level being
44% in Germany, 31% in Sweden, 27% in France and 20% in
Denmark.
Recent high-profile business and
government data losses may have affected the UK figure.
The overall levels were much higher when it came to personal
fears about the threat of identity theft.
These were:
- 79% in Germany
- 78% in the UK
- 70% in France
- 55% in Sweden
- 41% in Denmark
