Chelmsford Borough Council has selected the hosted
Websense E-mail Security system to protect its network and reduce
costs.
The three-year contract covers about 1,000 users and will help
the council
prevent spam and e-mail-borne threats.
Websense Hosted Email Security is now fully deployed following a
brief evaluation for testing. The service identifies and stops spam
and e-mail-borne viruses,
phishing attacks and other malware at the internet level.
This reduces administrative costs and time spent troubleshooting
unwanted e-mail on the network.
The Websense solution replaces an on-site
e-mail security system that was only stopping about 50% of
spam, resulting in high helpdesk call volumes and overhead
costs.
Already, the new hosted service has vastly improved spam
filtering rates, identifying an average of 75-80% of total email
volume as spam, and preventing it from ever reaching the council's
IT network.
Dan Prendergast, senior technical analyst for corporate services
at Chelmsford Borough Council, said, "We are implementing a layered
approach to security at the council and consolidating the number of
providers we work with.
"This is the first time we have used a hosted service that
provides email security away from our network, and this has
delivered an immediate return on investment, including a dramatic
decrease in helpdesk calls relating to spam e-mails."
