An electricity supplier has announced a plan to save UK
small and medium-sized enterprises millions of pounds
usingsmart metering
technology.
Opus Energy's £5m plan to give its more than 40,000 customers
energy-saving smart metres from
IMServ, is aimed at improving the accuracy of billing by
enabling the utility company to access readings remotely.
The company said figures released by The Carbon Trust show that
smart meter technology has the potential to save UK SMEs £300m a
year.
Charlie Crossley Cooke, managing director of Opus, said, "Smart
meters will not only improve the accuracy of bills, but the
technology will also save time and money as well as help to reduce
climate change."
Last year, enterprise minister John Hutton came out in support
of an accelerated deployment of smart meters within seven years to
tackle climate change.
He said smart meters gave clearer information to customers about
how much energy they are using and how much it is costing them,
encouraging them to cut their energy use.
The government is expected to reach an official position on
smart metering on the £6.1bn scheme early this year.
