Novell has returned to profitability thanks to a
bigsurge in open-source Linux-based software
sales.
For the first quarter ended 31 January, the firm reported sales
of £116m, compared to the £109m for the same quarter last year.
Operating profits reached £4m, compared to a £10.5m loss last
time.
For the quarter,
Novell said sales from open source systems totalled £15m, which
was 65% up year-on-year.
"We delivered product revenue growth across all business units
and continued expense control this quarter," said Ron Hovsepian,
Novell CEO. "These results are indicative that our strategic
initiatives are yielding tangible results and that we are on the
right path to achieve long-term, sustainable profitability."
