Cambridgeshire Constabularyhas
implemented aremote serviceportal to make its IT
systems accessible to members of neighbourhood policing teams and
other staff outside its secure network.
Tracey Hipperson, head of ICT at Cambridgeshire Constabulary,
said, "The fast-moving nature of our organisation means there is
often the need for a distributed group of people to access
information."
She said this meant extending secure access to IT systems beyond
the force's 48 offices to up to 150 authorised users at any given
time working at home or in remote locations using authentication
software and a standard web browser.
The portal, which uses Novell Access Manager to link to the
constabulary's existing
Citrix Presentation Server system for secure connections within
the organisation, is scheduled to be available across the whole
Cambridgeshire police force in 2008.
"The system allows us to restrict printing or saving of
information, ensuring we can protect sensitive information while
allowing staff to be productive outside the office," Hipperson
said.
She said the ability to deliver applications to desktops
anywhere had resulted in a more efficient use of hardware, which
will allow laptops to be replaced by less expensive thin client
devices.
