A social networking website aimed at tackling climate
change to be known asEdenbeeis to be launched early next month.
Software development company
New Bamboo used the Ruby
programming language on the Rails framework
(Ruby on Rails) for web applications to develop the Edenbee
site on time for its launch on 3 March.
David Hayes, co-founder of Edenbee, said, "New Bamboo's flexible
approach meant we could develop the site rapidly, which not only
allowed us to cut costs, but also meant we could incorporate all
the elements we wanted into Edenbee."
Ruby on Rails 2.0, released in December, represented a switch
from Soap (simple object access protocol) to Rest (representational
state transfer), which is already widely used by high profile
sites, including Amazon, to provide web services.
New Bamboo collaborated with design consultants Clearleft on the
website's user experience and its look and feel.
The site, which claims to the first of its kind, is designed to
enable users to calculate their carbon footprints and track their
progress towards reducing them.
The site uses a carbon calculator based on the Avoiding Mass
Extinction Engine used by the UK government for its Act on CO2
initiative.
The website will also enable users to collaborate with others
and share practical ways to reduce their emissions.
