Scotland's Renfrewshire Council has implemented
awide area wireless networkas part of
itsdigital inclusion projectto provide
citizens with residential high speed broadband.
The network is designed to provide wireless internet cover over
an area of five square kilometres.
The Renfrewshire Council chose the
Proxim Wireless
system from Scottish integration company CXS because it could
provide the internet access the council required at 10% of the cost
of competing proposals using wired systems.
CXS said they had proposed the Proxim system because it was most
suited to the Renfrewshire environment and delivered the best
results of all the wireless systems that were tested.
The network was deployed using 70 Proxim access points, 25
wireless links, and a 30Mbps wireless connection over 12km to
Shortroods at Glasgow Airport to provide internet access to 2,600
households in Renfrewshire.
Gordon Giles, Renfrewshire digital inclusion manager said, "I am
not aware of many other initiatives in the UK that provide wireless
and mesh broadband into residential homes to allow social
inclusion."
