Asda
, the Wal-Mart-owned retailer, is to extend its online shopping
service to another 40 stores and add more than 300,000 items to its
online catalogue to meet a sales target of £1bn by
2011.
The roll-out will create more than 1,300 new jobs in the stores,
and another 200 with the opening of a new distribution centre to
service ASDA Direct, the on-line catalogue business. The service,
which now carries more than 700,000 non-food items will grow to
more than one million, the retailer said.
Asda estimated its on-line business will generate sales of over
£1bn a year by 2011.
