TheIsle of Man governmenthas partnered
withUnisysto overhaul its IT systems in a
deal worth up to £20m.
The project includes the delivery of an island-wide
IP network, a tightly controlled desktop strategy, and a single
website infrastructure. The improvements have been supported by a
virtualised server architecture to cut server sprawl and reduce
costs.
The system follows the island's political commitment to the
economic development of the island and its adoption of an
e-government strategy allowing web-based communication between the
government and the island's 80,000 citizens and business
community.
Whilst the island openly courts technology and financial
services businesses, it realised the civic infrastructure was
beginning to fall behind the technological levels of the island's
corporate guests.
In order to keep up with the competition on the European
mainland and embrace a more business-centric relationship with its
citizens, the Isle of Man government believed that a fundamental
transformation of its IT infrastructure was necessary.
The government now has a single sign-on web system and a single
payments engine underpinning a robust online tax and VAT returns
service.
New virtualised servers have also resulted in greater
efficiency, resilience,
disaster recovery and scalability.
The infrastructure includes four Unisys ES7000/one enterprise
servers and EMC storage systems.
