E-trades surge on London and Milan exchanges

Electronic trades across the London and Italian stock exchanges during January were up 85% year on year.

New records were achieved in trading on the equity order books of Borsa Italiana and the London Stock Exchange during January 2008.

The average daily number of electronic equity trades carried out across the two exchanges increased by 85% on the January total last year, to 1.3 million.

The average daily value traded also grew, by 45%, to £15.3bn.

Borsa Italiana is integrating its systems with those of the London Stock Exchange, which acquired the Milan exchange last year.
